WATER BASICS
Everyone seems to agree that it's important to drink plenty of water to maintain our health, but most of us still go around in a constant state of dehydration. And that's not good. If we're low on fluids, we're setting ourselves up for a multitude of problems, not the least of which include strokes, heart attacks, kidney failure and on and on and on.
Various rules of thumb are used to estimate how much we should drink a day---the 6-8 big glasses/day rule, the one quart (liter)/50 lbs.(~25 kg) rule, the 1/2 oz. per lb. of body weight rule (I got that last one from Martha Stewart, so you know it's a goodie).
These rules, like most all rules, have inherent limitations---and like most all rules that are made to apply to 'everyone'--- are better broken, or at least bent. What we're getting at here, is that these rules of thumb are minimum amounts of water to drink each day, and apply only to folks in 'good' health. If you're physically active, are in a hot environment, fighting illness, etc. you need to drink more.
How much more to drink? That's a tough one.
One way to estimate :
drink according to the 'rules' while taking it easy for a couple for a couple of days (comfortable environment,no big exertions,etc.). Keep track of how often you pee.
Then, increase your water intake day to day to maintain that frequency.
It's really, really hard for a healthy person to drink too much water--- click here to see what might happen if someone actually DID manage to drink too much.
Coffee, tea, alcohol, sugar drinks, etc. etc. act as diuretics and cause you to lose water--so you need to drink more and more to keep up with what's getting flushed out---so it's better to stick with just plain water whenever possible.
CAUTION!---the above advice doesn't apply to patients suffering from significant heart failure, kidney failure and a few other diseases---although these folks often do better when getting a bit more water than they now do---something to talk about with your physician on an individual basis.

A guide to FREE HEALTHCARE
We all have to stop buying into the mentality here in the US that we can do whatever we want to our bodies, then take a pill when we start to break down
HEY DOCTORS ! I'M TALKING TO YOU, TOO!
There aren't any magic pills out there, mainstream or otherwise, that will make it all better, no matter how many studies, drug representatives (see: dope pusher) or other patients say otherwise, if you haven't taken care of the basics.
"IF YOU WANT something done right, you've got to do it yourself!" -F.Zappa
In this column,we'll show some basic ideas for taking care of yourself at home, healthy (not too painful) lifestyle strageties, and how to minimize the amounts of poisons you stuff into your face.
The format here is going to have very little of what you might call structure; associations will be loose. If a certain subsection interests you, keep an eye on it-- changes and additions can occur daily.

We've found, like the quote implies, the best way to keep people healthy is to get them involved to take full responsibility for their own well being.
So, keep in mind,
information obtained here is only intended to get you started in the right directions, and maybe give you a little coaching and encouragement along the way.
AS ALWAYS, if you have contributions, send'em in, we'll make'em fit!
The distinctions between mainstream and alternative/complementary continue to disappear...
THERE'S BEEN a lot in the news lately regarding the dangers of trans fats --something alternative docs have been preaching about for years. A recent news article from the AP said the president's boys have pretty much told the FDA to get the lead out and start labeling trans fat, or trans fatty acid (TFA) levels in America's food. It's about flippin' time!
For anyone who's not yet familiar with TFAs and how they contribute to everyone's early demise, here's a quick, incomplete overview: (I hope it scares you, it should)
TFAs, also called hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils, are made by

A good rule of thumb : assume anything and everything re: health and nutrition you see advertised on TV is a lie--a reliable health tip!
FREE CHELATION!!
Chelation, as most health care folks know it, is a medical therapy where a substance is administered to attach to and remove metals/minerals from your body.
This is a good thing--- chelation will remove a long list of blatently toxic metals like lead, aluminum, cadmium, mercury, etc. etc. --and a few other minerals we normally think of as desirable, but are harmful in the wrong concentrations--- like iron, calcium, and copper, among others).
Chelation has other beneficial actions, too--- like being an antioxidant/free radical scavenger, and interacting metabolically with a bunch of other stuff, but let's keep it simple---I'm getting sleepy just thinking about it!
Intravenous chelation is much more effective---if you can find a clinic that offers it---
but here's some ways to be a do-it-yourselfer:
Take your vitamins (and minerals). Vitamin C, for example, is a pretty good antioxidant/chelator, and is also cheap, non toxic and well absorbed. Besides, C has lots of other bennies.
More on vitamins soon...
A lot of "people" out there will try to sell you high priced 'chelating formulas'----these are most effective in chelating your bank account, so watch out. There's a minor amount of transfer of toxins from your blood to your gut, but not nearly as much as they'd like you to believe.
If you eat a lot of chelating agents, you're risking mineral depletion. Chelating agents attach to the first available mineral they come in contact with, and that means minerals in your food .
Exercise! Working muscles form lactic acid. Lactic acid is an excellent chelating agent.
Donate blood. Don't worry, you'll make more.
Excess iron is associated with increased risk of heart disease.
Women have a lower risk of having a heart attack up until the time they hit menopause. There's a theory floating around that this is may be in part due to a relative anemia from menstral blood loss. Hmmm...
Heavy metals tend to be in equilibrium between blood and tissue. Remove some blood, remove some toxins. The blood your body produces as replacement will, in effect, pull some toxic metals from your tissues.
So, hey, maybe those old dudes with the leeches weren't as wacked as we thought...( no, I'm not suggesting what you think I'm suggesting! )
Be patient. Clean up your lifestyle. Our bodies naturally, gradually clean themselves--- we accumulate toxins because our intake far exceeds our excretion.
